Old Westbury Gardens and the Village
Old Westbury Gardens is a 200-acre estate on Old Westbury Road that used to be the private home of John S. Phipps and his wife, Margarita Grace Phipps, and now operates as a nonprofit museum and garden open to the public.
The grounds and historic house provide the setting for the Gardens' seasonal program.
The Bricks Came Down Right After Labor Day
For most of the summer, the Gardens ran on a different rhythm than they will this fall. Sean Kenney's Nature Connects exhibit, 17 large-scale sculptures built from more than 300,000 LEGO bricks and scattered across two miles of trail, opened to Old Westbury Gardens members on May 15 and to the public the following day. It was the first time the exhibit had appeared anywhere in New York State, and it turned the property into a family destination for the better part of four months. The exhibit closed for good on September 7, just after Labor Day.
That closing date is worth sitting with, because it marks a real shift in who the Gardens are built for right now. The family-daytime crowd that came for the sculptures has moved on. What's left through the fall is a smaller, quieter, adult-facing calendar centered inside Westbury House itself rather than out on the lawns.
What Actually Fills the Calendar Through Halloween
The centerpiece of the fall program is Poetica Musica, the chamber music group that has served as artist-in-residence at the Gardens for years, performing inside the historic house rather than under a tent on the grounds. Two dates matter most for anyone who wants to catch this before the season closes.
On September 26 at 8 p.m., Poetica Musica presents "We the People: USA at 250," a program built around the American songbook, with works by Aaron Copland, Cole Porter, Scott Joplin, William Bolcom, Katherine Hoover, and Robert Beaser. Then on October 17, the group returns with "The Song of the Cello," featuring Pablo Casals' "The Song of the Birds" and Rachmaninoff's "Vocalise" among other selections. Both nights include a 7:30 p.m. pre-concert talk and a reception with the artists afterward on the West Porch. Tickets run $30, or $25 for members, seniors 62 and older, and full-time students with ID.
These aren't drop-in events the way the summer exhibit was. They're ticketed, indoor, and timed to a specific evening, which means missing one isn't a matter of catching it another day. There's no rain date for a concert that's already sold its seats.
A Different Kind of Season Opener: The Gardens' Own History, in Print
The most unusual date on the fall calendar isn't a concert at all. On October 6, Old Westbury Gardens hosts a signing and conversation for "Old Westbury Gardens: Days of Grace on Long Island," a new book by Clive Aslet and Dylan Thomas published by Triglyph Books and released that same day.
It's a small thing on paper, a book launch at a garden estate, but it's the kind of event that only happens once. The house at the center of the property was completed in 1906 in the Charles II style favored by the Phipps family, and it's been open to the public in some form for decades. A formal, published history of the estate arriving now, timed to a signing on the grounds, is a first for the village. Residents who want a copy signed by the authors have exactly one shot at it before the book becomes something you order rather than something you pick up at the source.

Scheduled Fall Closure
The Gardens rent out Westbury House and the grounds for private events, and those events can include public closures. The fall calendar lists a closure on October 11. Library passes dated for October 11 will be honored on October 10 or 12.
Private events are part of the Gardens' calendar, and the pass policy offers one way to accommodate visitors affected by them.
The Regular Season Ends October 31
Grounds are open daily except Tuesdays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., through the end of October. After that, the regular season closes, and what's left is a handful of select weekend openings scattered through November and December rather than the daily access residents have had since April.
